Zion’s roots dig deep into the heart of Newburgh, Indiana with it’s founding families being remembered in road signs and other county fixtures. By 1855, the German Evangelical Church of Newburgh was already established and in need of a full time pastor. The congregation at the time gathering in warehouses, homes, schools and stores around Newburgh. The membership thriving in a worship service where the gospel was preached in their native German language. In 1860, formal bylaws and a constitution were written and accepted on December 10th which was set as the official start date of the church.
Shortly after, attention turned to construction of a permanent place of worship. Unfortunately due to the Civil War, construction was put on hold and did not officially start util 1863. Construction began on an area of land gifted to the church from a very early philanthropist of Newburgh named A.M. Phelps. The corner stone of the church was laid on September 3, 1863 inscribed with “Deutsch Evangelische Zions Kirche, A.D. 1863” (German Evangelical Zions Church, A.D. 1863).
Growth of the church drove new construction for many years including such areas as a Sunday School Annex, Parsonage and eventually a new church building to house the ever growing congregation. Today, the church stands as a continued place of worship located at 10 W 1st since July 12th, 1959.
Zion United Church of Christ has remained and will remain a constant fixture of God’s presence in the world and in Newburgh through it’s members and their missions.
